Antique Iroquois basket, Mohawk, attributed, hand woven ash splints and grass, ca. 1920's - 30's, a collection history to Western New York State, my personal thoughts are that baskets with this square shape, using plain plaiting of varying sizes of large and small weavers, with a tapering shoulder to the square top, probably originated in the Hudson River Valley, then when the Mahican, also Mohican, were forced west in the 19thC by Europeans, it was introduced to the Iroquois who allowed them safe abode in their lands, and from there to Maine and the Western Great Lakes by trade and migration patterns, this is only my personal opinion, the addition of grass and the collection history help to give it a Mohawk attribution, general good antique condition, a bit brittle in places but stable, some cracked and missing weavers, the approximate size is 9 inches wide x 7.5 inches tall x 5.5 inches deep, #11227, shipping is extra
